Web Developer (Front End)

Job Description

The TunnelBear Engineering team is looking for a Web Engineer with a focus on Front End Development and an eye for exceptional UX. You will define how our millions of users see and interact with the TunnelBear website by helping us build scalable and intuitive web applications. This is a full-time salary position based in downtown Toronto.

About You

You take joy in finding simple solutions to complex problems and share our passion for mauling internet access-restriction, digital privacy, and random digital bear humour. You will own many aspects of the front end development at TunnelBear. You will be working with an exceptional team and building interfaces for all our web applications and portals. Put simply, you’re on point to translate great ideas and designs into flawless HTML/CSS, and hooking it up with the backend API. We are a small company, so naturally the kind of people who tend to succeed in our team are generalists. Just as our backend developers aren’t afraid to make changes in the JavaScript code if necessary, you shouldn’t cower at the sight of a backend template or an occasional API endpoint that needs tweaking.

  • Write clean, reusable, and well-tested JavaScript/CSS/HTML
  • Collaborate with the team to create beautiful, modern and responsive web experiences
  • Test your code using Test Driven Development, writing both unit and functional tests
  • Contribute to design and code reviews; identify best practices for front end engineering
  • Make meaningful suggestions on how to improve our web user experience
  • Author the occasional bear-themed pun (optional)
  • Create accessible and intuitive UX that satisfies the balance between design and usability

Skills We Require

  • Know JavaScript (and by JavaScript we don’t mean JQuery)
  • You’re comfortable working with Angular and React.
  • Keep an eye on the latest JS libraries and frameworks and have opinions about them
  • Have some emotional scars from fighting tricky front end issues, such as responsive design and browser compatibility
  • Have a good working relationship with HTML5/CSS3
  • Live and die by your tools - whether it's git, vim, Atom, Sublime Text, or whatever
  • Have a thorough understanding of automation tools and preprocessors like Gulp, Grunt, Less and Pug.
  • You understand how to organize and manage effective web analytics and tools
  • Fierce independence to work and learn skills outside of your comfort zone and persevere to get things done
  • You are passionate about UX and can make meaningful contributions to the conversation
  • You can build things from scratch. Apps, plugins, tools etc.
